Director's Message

 

The African continent, home to more than a billion people; it is the second largest continent in the world with a surface area of 30,370,000 km². The African continent with 54 countries in total; although it is known for hunger, poverty, drought, epidemic, disease, ethnic conflict and violence, it is also an area where developed countries compete politically, militarily and economically.

 

Although the African continent is a favorite of foreign investors with its natural resources and cheap labor it provides, it is also seen as an important field by researchers in Turkey due to its strategic importance in the historical process. In this sense, with the African Studies Application and Research Center we established within Fenerbahçe University, The African continent will be examined in terms of communication studies, intercultural communication, strategic communication, international migration, media studies, social psychology, international relations, sociology and psychology disciplines and will contribute to related studies.

 

Our center; with the aim of conducting scientific research in the field of African Studies, it aims to produce interdisciplinary knowledge in the field by contributing to the development and expansion of existing scientific studies in cooperation with different sciences such as communication sciences, humanities and social sciences and health sciences.

History

Fenerbahçe University African Studies Application and Research Center was established in 2020 under the name of "African Studies Center". It extends its research topics to contribute to interdisciplinary studies and research within the scope of African Studies.

 

Goals

To conduct scientific research in the field of African Studies, to encourage and support researches in this field, to organize conferences, symposiums, seminars,

 

Organizing short-term certificate programs for researchers that are interested in the field of African Studies and aim to do academic work in this field,

 

To produce joint projects in cooperation with other universities and organizations working in the field of African Studies, to make suggestions to the relevant organizations in order to ensure mutual transfer of knowledge, ideas and experience,

 

To carry out joint research projects with universities, centers, associations and organizations abroad and to create mutual student/faculty exchange opportunities nationally/internationally,

 

To carry out academic research on African Studies to be published in national/international journals and books,

 

To train research assistants and faculty members who are experts in the field of African Studies,

 

Encouraging and providing academic support for the projects and thesis studies of Fenerbahçe University students in the field of African Studies at undergraduate and graduate levels,

 

To publish reports, bulletins, projects, books, articles, journals, dictionaries and similar publications that explain the scientific and technical findings and data obtained as a result of research and application studies in the field of African Studies,

 

To increase interdisciplinary cooperation by collaborating with the departments of the universities, especially the Faculty of Communication, the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, and the Health Sciences Faculties.

 

Vision

With the activities of the center, undergraduate and graduate students will be enabled to use the information they have acquired in courses in a way that contributes to the projects and academic publications produced by the center. In this way, in addition to the students who have gained the awareness of research while they are still in the education phase, professional people who want to specialize on the African Studies will be trained with the training programs organized by the center.

 

The joint studies that our African Studies Application and Research Center will carry out with the interdisciplinary perspective will contribute to the reproduction of knowledge and it has undertaken a pioneering task in Turkey by enabling academic discussion platforms about the field.

 

The mission of making the research spirit a lifestyle that distinguishes our center from other centers will also support researchers who research and analyze social problems, produce effective and rational solutions, work in line with professional ethical principles, and use their professional knowledge and skills in business life professionally.

 

Mission

The mission of Fenerbahçe University African Studies Application and Research Center is to produce new knowledge and theories by conducting scientific research in the field of African Studies, and to ensure that the outputs of the center are shared with the society. Our center will also fulfill the research mission of our university. Our center has adopted the mission of carrying out researches that make sense in life, benefit society and increase the quality of life by pioneering the solution of problems concerning society.

A Comparative Interview on the Covid-19 Policies of the Horn of Africa

Director of African Studies Application and Research Center Assoc.Prof.Dr. Özlem Özdemir and Director of the European Studies Application and Research Center Assistant Professor Nihan Köseoğlu held a Comparative Interview on the Covid-19 Policies of the European Union and the Horn of Africa on October 6, 2020.

 

Turkey as a Humanitarian Actor in Somalia

Director of African Studies Application and Research Center Assoc.Prof.Dr.  Özlem Özdemir; Somalia Deputy Said Mohamed Mohamuud Haid and the Director of the East African Research and Strategic Research Center Abdalla Ahmed İbrahim will make a presentation titled "Turkey as a Humanitarian Actor in Somalia" at the African Conference to be held in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, between 17-18 October. At the conference to be held in Nigeria, Özdemir will emphasize the strategic importance of Somalia located in the Horn of Africa, the historical dimension of Turkey-Somalia relations, Turkey's assistance to Somalia as a Humanitarian Actor, and the importance of Turkey's support in Somalia's fight against COVID-19.

 

Media Portrayel of Female Genital Mutalation/Cutting as a Harmful Traditional Practice

Elif Başak Sarıoğlu, Assistant Professor of Communication Faculty; Director of African Studies Application and Research Center Assoc.Prof.Dr. Özlem Özdemir will give a presentation titled "Media Portrayel of Female Genital Mutalation/Cutting as a Harmful Traditional Practice" at the African Conference to be held in Abuja, Nigeria between 17-18 October. Female circumcision, which affects at least 200 million girls or women in the world and is applied in approximately 35 countries, causes lifelong psychological traumas and physiological effects on individuals. In the conference to be held in Nigeria, Sarıoğlu and Özdemir will emphasize the importance of handling the issue in the media in terms of critical discourse analysis.

 

The Last Decade of Somalia-Turkey Relations

Director of African Studies Application and Research Center Assoc. Prof. Dr. ÖzlemÖzdemir and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Communication Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Başak Sarıoğlu and Principal Security Advisor of Somalia Ministry of Interior Security Dr. Ahmed M. Hassan held a conference titled "The Last Decade of Somalia-Turkey Relations" on September 2, 2021 at 14:00
